Answering Life’s Most Difficult Questions

There are many questions that are unanswerable. Why does the universe exist? How was it created? Will humans ever go extinct? While these questions may never be answered, some questions that are in this category of “unanswerable” seem to have straightforward answers. In this article, I go through a few of such questions and provide, what I believe are, the answers to them.

Note that while giving some explanation for the responses, I don’t address any counter arguments.

1. Does God(s) exist?

No. There is no evidence for the existence of any religious God and it would be impossible for one to exist in the first place.

2. What happens to humans after death?

Our consciousness simply stops. Our bodies decay. Like all other living things, we are recycled back into the ecosystem. There is no afterlife or heaven; our personality and memories are lost forever.

3. Do we have free will?

Yes. Nothing is predetermined. Most things happen basically by random chance, and any decision we make is our own.

4. What is the purpose of life?

Nothing. It has no inherent purpose. Or, in other words, its purpose is whatever you assign to it.

5. Are tomatoes fruits or vegetables?

They are both. Scientifically, they are fruits. That is what botanists have classified them as. However, “vegetable” is not a scientific classification. Vegetables are parts of plants that are consumed by humans. Their classification is based on culinary practices and collective opinion. Tomatoes are also vegetables based on how they are used and consumed.

6. Are people born with their personalities or do they learn them (nature or nurture)?

It’s a bit of both. People, and other intelligent life, tend towards some personality traits because of their biology, and some personality traits are learned.

7. Are soulmates real?

No. People choose who they want to be with and love (for their entire lives). “Soulmates” are not found, they are made.

8. Who decides what is good and what is evil?

Anyone and everyone can decide what is good and what is evil. Good and evil are concepts made up by humans to describe people’s behaviour. Although, generally, behaviour that harms other people in any way is considered evil and behaviour that helps other people in any way is considered good.

9. Are we in a simulation?

No. There is no evidence that we are a part of a simulation, and it would be impossible for such a thing to exist. (edit – actually, I feel like I can’t entirely rule out this possibility. Maybe this question is really unanswerable?) (edit – actually, we are definitely not in a simulation. disregard previous edit.)

10. What is love?

Baby don’t hurt me.
