Hunter x Hunter is one of the most popular and well-received anime of all time. It is a thrilling shonen anime with some of the most intense fights and suspenseful journeys you’ll ever see. The story follows Gon Freecss, as he leaves his comfy home in search of a father he’d never met before. Far more important, however, are the people he meets and the places he sees along the way.
This anime stands out from all the rest for its incredible world-building, exciting characters, and numerous captivating adventures. This anime has it all. But I want to highlight, in particular, the incredible villains that the author, Yoshihiro Togashi, has dreamt up. From the first episodes, Hisoka’s creepy thirst for combat and a seemingly sexual desire to fight strong opponents was actually really entertaining. He would come on screen and I’d be like “Oh snap! Something’s about to go down!”. I felt the same for the Phantom Troupe and, of course, the Chimera Ant King. Hunter x Hunter has the best villains in anime hands-down.
The main issue I had with Hunter x Hunter was its length. At 148 episodes, this anime is a huge time commitment. Although I didn’t find a single filler episode, I simply wished they had trimmed it down. Maybe there were too many flashbacks or maybe there was just too much time having the narrator explain what was going on. I wouldn’t want them to cut any of the content, and its pacing makes sense if you’re watching an episode each week as it was intended, but binge watching it, like I did, makes it feel just too long. I mean, the Chimera Ant Arc alone, although it was amazing to watch, was a herculean 60 episodes. All that said, it was totally worth watching every one of the 148 episodes.
I don’t have any hot take to give you here. I wanted to review Hunter x Hunter because it’s one of my favorites and you have to watch it.
